DAVE GROHL Says FOO FIGHTERS Is Finally 'Out Of The Shadow' Of NIRVANA - Apr. 6, 2011
According to The Pulse Of Radio, FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl feels he's at last moved "out of the shadow" of his previous band, NIRVANA, enough that he felt comfortable inviting former NIRVANA bassist Krist Novoselic to contribute to a song called "I Should Have Known" on the new FOO FIGHTERS album, "Wasting Light". Grohl, who was unknown when he joined NIRVANA on drums, told the Sun, "I've tried to establish this band in its own right and try to get out of the shadow of NIRVANA and I do that in the most respectful way. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for NIRVANA, I owe everything to that band."

Grohl also opens up about his days in NIRVANA in the new FOO FIGHTERS documentary, "Back And Forth", and told The Pulse Of Radio why he decided to finally speak at length about that period. "I think I knew that I had to really tell the truth," he said. "I mean, there's some interviews where you just sort of gloss over it, because it's not something that you want to talk about all day, every day. But in this case, James (Moll, documentary director) was there for a reason, and I don't know how he did it, but he made you feel sort of safe in really confessing things that you may have never owned up to."

"Back And Forth" was screened at more than 80 movie theaters around the country on Tuesday (April 5), followed by a live 3D broadcast of a FOO FIGHTERS performance. The documentary tells the entire story of the group's career, from Grohl's first demo recordings to the making of "Wasting Light". The movie will also air on April 8 on VH1, VH1 Classic and Palladia.

"Wasting Light" comes out the following Tuesday (April 12).

The album was recorded in Grohl's garage and produced by Butch Vig, who produced NIRVANA's landmark 1991 album "Nevermind", on which Grohl made his debut with that group. This is the first time Grohl, Vig and Novoselic have worked together since making that record.

FOO FIGHTERS will play in the garages of fans in eight cities later this month before launching a full North American tour in May.

Yeah, but he's such a dynamic frontman, so I think he's in the right spot now.

I think after you released "One By One" that you had successfully accomplished that goal. Just my opinion though.

I've had to explain to kids (18 yr. old) that he was the drummer in Nirvana, so I don't what he's talking about.
I wonder if Grohl will talk about the drama/problems between him and Cobain in that documentary?

It makes people draw a direct comparison.

Kurt Cobain's voice and guitar growled.
Dave Grohl's voice and guitar don't.

Getting out of a shadow insinuates you've become greater than what preceded you. THAT'S NOT THE CASE HERE.

Getting out of a shadow insinuates that you can stand on your own, regardless of whether your band happens to be better or now. Anyone who draws a direct comparison was already looking to do so in the first place (like you).

Anyway, both bands are great and Dave is a class act.

when I first heard of the Foo Fighters, I did not even know that Dave Grohl was in the band. I think that goal was accomplished a while ago personally. I never closely associated the two bands.

If you think the FF are only known for just Mentos. then there is something wrong. They have put out a string of great solid rock albums throughout their career. and Dave & crew are still going strong w/ no slowing down. mad respect to them.

Yep, and they are so far out that I can't stand that shit. Dave now acts like the Queen of Siam since Kurt is gone and the guy really never has anything intelligent to say. I always felt this was the sellout portion of the aftermath in which Courtney actually had zero control in and it's just not half as cool as Nirvana...and we all know why.

..those first few years were like "Nirvana's drummer's new band..." I thought it would be some novelty band that would eventually fade away into obscurity (like Kris's projects), but no... they're still around.

These days, when you hear the name Foo Fighters, you think Dave Grohl. When you hear the name Dave Grohl, you think Foo Fighters.

It's hard to believe Nevermind is 20-years-old (give or take a few months).

For those too young to remember, MTV was dominated by Slaugther's "Fly to the Angels" and Warrant's "Cherry Pie."

Again, for those too young to remember, MTV was a music channel that played music videos.

I liked Nirvana because it was good and it wasn't hair metal. Dave liked to beat the shit out of his drums and it was fun until Curt hated that being a rock star took time from doing drugs and ate a shotgun. Foo Fighters are a bit too poppy for my tastes, but it does allow him time to make side projects like Probot and make guest appearances for the metal influences I grew up with also. So I see Foo Fighters as a means to an end. My benefit. Also, Nevermind STILL holds up well to this day. Excellent CD

2 Different bands, so there should be no comparisons. As a fan of Nirvana, I bought the 1st FF album b/c Dave was the drummer of Nirvana. That being said, I couldn't get into FF & have yet to hear anything from them that I like. Perhaps there's better stuff that hasn't gone to radio. Probot on the other hand was kick ass & Grohl is indeed a beast on the kit. Understand the need to move on & not try to emulate his pervious band. Footos, the fresh fighter.

Maybe that is how Dave felt and for him it took longer but personally, I feel they stepped into their own years ago. Besides, 2 very different bands with different styles. May play for the same fans but different bands other than maybe a few songs (think Pocket Watch demos) drawing any Nirvana comparisons.

I remember when the first Foo record came out and of course the Nirvana ties/comparisons were topic of discussion as some people/media outlets would not let Foo stand on its own. Back in 1995, it was still Nirvana this or Nirvana that which goes to show how much influence they had on Alternative rock even after Kurt's death.

Speaking of Nirvana. I can truly Appreciate them more so now than I ever did. I remember September 1991 buying the Nevermind cassette before they blew up and thinking wow, this is either way ahead of its time and won't get noticed ... or, they're going to be the next big thing (had no idea. For me who was in h/s at that time, you have to understand something (for the younger people). The late 80's/1990-91 music landscape was polluted with dance pop (CC Music Factory), gangsta rap, left over hair metal (that was on the frantic decline), new jack swing, and POP (top 40 crap like Madonna's house influenced Vogue). That was what was happening at the time and good rock music (for that time) was something you had to discover on your own as radio/media did not really care for it unless if you were G N' R...... Then something happened late 91/early 92. Alternative Rock and it killed all the previous mentioned which was HIGHLY refreshing at the time. I remember kids ditching the pop of that time and trading it for Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Rage Against The Machine, Primus, Red Hot Chili Peppers, NIN.... it was revolution all lead by Nirvana.

Love em or hate them, Nirvana changed everything and was very influential for its time. I forever show my gratitude for making rock and roll ALIVE which it was very dead in 1991.
