ANTHRAX's JOEY BELLADONNA Sings With JOURNEY, FOREIGNER Backline Crew At NY STATE FAIR (Video) - Sep. 4, 2011
Video footage of ANTHRAX frontman Joey Belladonna singing JOURNEY's "Separate Ways" and FOREIGNER's "Double Vision" with the backline crew during soundcheck at FOREIGNER and JOURNEY's joint concert on August 30 at the New York State Fair in Syracuse, New York can be seen below.

Belladonna regularly performs JOURNEY and FOREIGNER classics with his Syracuse, New York-based power trio CHIEF BIG WAY in which he plays drums and sings.

In a 2005 interview with MusicDish, Belladonna was asked about the rumor that he came to the table with a JOURNEY tune during his 1985 audition for ANTHRAX. "Actually, what happened was I went into the room and they said, 'Just go on in,' and they hadn't heard me sing," he said. "They'd heard of me and they asked me to come in, but we were going in to start tracking and stuff, to get the mic set up and all that and they said, 'Let's get you in there and get you warmed up.' I hit the mic and belted out some JOURNEY. . . I think it was [the song] 'Lights'. I didn't know what the hell I was getting into in the first place. I just wanted to lay some vocals or something. Just to kinda give an idea and that's what happened. It wasn't really anything more than that. I just kinda belched it out. I think I did 'Oh Sherrie' [written by JOURNEY singer Steve Perry], too, or something. I dunno why, but I just did. It was something off the top of my head I could do a cappella and it was kinda challenging. I thought maybe in range or something that would be kind of intriguing. It was definitely one they weren't expecting."

In a 2010 interview with Tricia Weight, Joey stated about CHIEF BIG WAY, "We're doing all 'old school' shit — like LED ZEPPELIN and RUSH and JOURNEY and FOREIGNER and BAD COMPANY and THE WHO and BOSTON and PINK FLOYD and all that stuff."

When asked if singing those different styles of music in his side projects was good for him, almost acting like "exercises" to keep his vocals in shape, Belladonna said, "Yeah, it [is]. I mean, now I've got more projects than I've ever had. Even at home I sing to records, that's how I learned to do it anyhow, I used to pull out the coolest records and sing to 'em all day long, before I went out [on stage]. And I do it now, even [on the way] to the gig. If we've got an hour drive tonight — I'm rocking the stuff on the iPod all the way there!"

Never thought he could sing, but, he doesn't sound too bad. Sounds almost like Dio on the Foreigner tune.

On that Journey song....he's singing to a backing track, isn't he?

so anthrax hired a singer who walked into a heavy metal band audition and sang JOURNEY? your FIRST clue that you hired the wrong guy for the job.

You are a walking example of the need for anI Q test to post online. He is just hanging out during soundcheck as is obvious by the empty front rows and crew onstage at a Journey\Foreigner show.

great vocals on two great songs. nice

imagine if he got offered a job singing for a major classic rock band and could do anthrax on his own terms. maybe then they would drop the attitudes. they would be nowhere without him right now, they should be kissing his feet

I still have the hit parader or circus (can't remember right now) magazine where Anthrax said part of the reason they fired Joey was because he was listening to (and I guess being vocally influenced by) too much Journey. LMAO.

reason for dismissal. I like so much mellow, slow tempo music, but the majority of Journey post 1980 was fluff. Separate ways, faithfully, Don't stop believing(it was bad enough one time around), open arms...Open Arms/faithfully are on par with Air supply, just complete "chick" music for lack of better words...and I love a good ballad...

I scratch my head as to why Journey, and Bon Jovi get a second round. I get people wanting to relive their highschool music, but this was terrible round 1....and I can appreciate Journey(not BonJovi) are excellent muisicans, I like a couple of tunes(love "feeling that wayanytime" but so little else.

just throw a pile of money at John and beg him to come back. To all you morons who think Anthrax with John isn't thrash, open your fucking ears. He's the lion, Joey is the bird as Scott said not so long ago.

@jph: if you think Bush-era Anthrax is thrash, then you don't know what the fuck thrash metal is. "Groove" metal riffs and beats to hop around to like the Samsonite gorilla is NOT thrash. "Random Acts of Senseless Violence?" "American Pompeii?" Get the fuck outta here.

"Packaged Rebellion" sounds like something that could've been off Metallica's black album, and "Only" sounds like an unused Alice In Chains idea.

"A.I.R.," "Stand or Fall," "Caught In A Mosh," "Skeletons In The Closet," "Indians" = THRASH METAL

Get it right.

You're probably one of those people who thinks Bush era Anthrax is nu-metal, huh? Speaking of hop around metal, you probably like the new song "The Devil You Know." That sounds like pop metal to me, douche bag.

After hearing an actual copy of the cd, Joey sounds phenomenal on the new cd and I've never been a huge fan of his voice even when I was younger. (P.O.T. was probably his most balanced performance.) He really shows how diverse his voice is on this one. First day buyer and I've HATED Anthrax for about 15 years now personally knowing how cunty the 2 ringleaders of this circus are.

To the band,.....Joey is the reason this CD is decent. The music is all right overall but Joey owns it and will put ALL the doubts and the Bush/Belladonna debate to rest, seriously....this coming from a guy who thought Bush WAS better than Joey for a while

Best of luck to ya dude, you truly deserve any and all success you get from here on out. Scott and Charlie, douchebags to the end, don't fuck it up again......

Naw, I don't think Bush Anthrax is nu metal. I just think that in comparison to classic Anthrax, it's LAME metal. It sure as hell isn't THRASH.

Then again, you most likely discovered Anthrax in the past 10 years, so I wouldn't expect you to understand.

Actually, I grew up listening th thrash and am probably considerably older than you, asshole. Also, I'm sure Scott and Charlie would agree with your dumbass statement that they weren't thrash with Bush, right? If you think "The Devil You Know" is thrash, I feel sorry for you and you need "schoolin'." Stupid fuck.
