ANTHRAX Drummer: Listening To BELLADONNA In Studio Gave Me A Feeling I Hadn't Had In A While - Oct. 10, 2011
David Hens of Buffalo Concerts Examiner recently conducted an interview with ANTHRAX drummer Charlie Benante. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Buffalo Concerts Examiner: As amazing as "Among The Living" is, I think "Worship Music" is the best-sounding ANTHRAX album yet. What were your expectations when you first began recording?

Benante: We didn't really have any expectations. By about the fifth song, we could feel the record starting to take shape, and we were able to go back and rewrite anything that didn't work. A lot of what we had in the beginning stayed, because we knew it sounded the way we wanted it to.

Buffalo Concerts Examiner: How does it feel to have Joey Belladonna back in the fold?

Benante: It's awesome, you know? Back in the early '90s we were different people and not as mature as we are now. Some unwise decisions were made, but you just have to roll with it. There was a moment while recording where I listened to Joey sing, and I knew right then that ANTHRAX was back. I immediately said, "That sounds like ANTHRAX."

Buffalo Concerts Examiner: What do you think Joey brings to the band that previous singers didn't?

Benante: For the most part, I think he brings familiarity. He was our singer in the '80s, and, for people who grew up on our music, I think it will be a huge boost to the band's appeal. As I said before, listening to him in the studio gave me a feeling that I hadn't had in a while, which reinforced what we as a band already knew. That he's the perfect fit for us.

Buffalo Concerts Examiner: How does the released version differ from the unreleased version of the album?

Benante: Well, some things we kept, and others we didn't. Overall, it didn't change too much.

Buffalo Concerts Examiner: I really like the song "The Devil You Know". How did that come about?

Benante: That was a different song for us. It was kind of our version of AC/DC combined with the boogie beat of "Caught In A Mosh", which brought with it a killer chorus. I love the driving beat the song has.

Buffalo Concerts Examiner: "In the End" is arguably the greatest song you guys have ever written. Where would you rank it among the catalog?

Benante: It's my favorite. Because of the emotional tie I have to that song, the meaning runs a lot deeper for me.

constantly touting Joey and talking about how great he is now? They kicked him out in the early 90's and now they can't get enough of this guy. Wouldn't seem weird except they said the same thing about Bush being the best singer they ever had, then Dan being the best singer they ever had... Hell did they say that about Neil? They gonna bring him back next?

it all smells of desperation, hoping that Joey will stick around. They're kissing his ass WAY too much to not be afraid.

The interviewer nailed it when he said "In The End" might be the greatest Anthrax song of all time. Great vocal performance from Joey Belladonna. That song gives me chills!

The Hymn before the song & the begining of 'In The End' sounds like Savatage! (Or TSO)

This album is nowhere near the best Anthrax album. Who ever is saying this is on crack. I am already bored of the new album. But I still never get bored of Among The Living or Persistence of Time. Those are Anthrax's best albums by far. Worship music is better than anything they have done since POT. But to say it's their best album yet is bullshit

Worship Music is the greatest album from any band in years. I'll say that much. Is it the best Anthrax album? No. I prefer Persistence of Time. As much as I liked one of the albums with John Bush (The Sound of White Noise), I prefer any album with Joey, any day of the week, any month, any year. Joey is Anthrax. That's it. Speaking of AC/DC (in the article), they are the only band I would accept with a different front man than the original, only because Bon Scott is dead (RIP), but Brian Johnson was one hell of a replacement. That is EXTREMELY rare. To me, Dale Evans didn't count because he did not appear on any album...only demos, from what I understand.

and the whole thing reeks of desperation. They fucked over John with the original reunion shit, then fucked over Belladonna right after that, then there was the hack issue with Dan Nelson.

Belladonna was the only option left for these guys. After years & years of dicking around this is the last chance for the band. Ian is being forced to accept Belladonna in the band as he really wanted Bush but now has been silenced.

Like Public Enemy stated "Don't believe the hype..."

has too much dignity to come back again, and they know it. So now they suck up to Joey because the "bully" left/quit/shat on them.

Weird..Scott Ian says that only about 15 percent of the original record was kept, and then Benate says "most of it"..I wonder also how much Dan Nelson wrote and wasn't credited for. I feel sorry for Belladonna, even though he's the star of the show nowadays...He definitely deserves credit for saving their asses, and the album is pretty good, but the whole thing is kind of..sketchy.

What "unwise decisions" is he talking about? Writing great songs like "Black Lodge" or "Invisible"?

I guess that material is "unwise" now because they have a singer that can't perform those songs.

If Belladonna wasn't a fuckup they never would have booted him. Anyone that rememebers that tour with PE and Gang of Four, remembers why Belladonna was gone. If you can't stop drinking for long enough to perform for two fucking hours, then you don't get to be in a signed band that tours.

As far as fucking over John Bush? You kids need to realize a couple things. Sure, Bush is a great singer and a great guy, but Anthrax only gets to play clubs with him. Scott Ian got paid more doing those I Love the 80's spots then touring with his band. They all pretty much knew that after WHCFYA tanked, as good as a record as it was, they were done. If they don't bring Joey and Mark back when they did, this thread wouldn't exist. So they do their shows with the classic lineup and get paid. Mark was never back for the long term. But they knew they had to get Joey back. And Joey knew it too. He wanted too much money. Or his lawyers wanted too much for him. Either way, Dan Nelson was probably never the plan. That music was written for Joey's voice. The whole thing strikes me of, "if you don't come down off your asking price, we'll go one without you". as soon as Joey blinked, Dan was gone.

Scott says only Belladonna & the producer were there when he recorded vocals. Now Charlie talks about watching Joey in the studio? & I'm pretty sure Scott said the same thing before he said no one else was there...

debacle is Danny Spitz. He got out while the getting was good and has taken the high road above this drama-infested soap opera called Anthrax. From what I understand, he makes a great living from repairing/selling fancy watches and even got himself one awesome looking babe. Aside from that horrible DeuxMonkey nonsense, I would say that Danny made the right decision to not return to the 'thrax camp after that abortion of a reunion cashgrab a few years back. Scott and Charlie are just running on fumes (and desperation) now and it's time to stop pissing on the legacy of this once fine band.

There's a version with Dan Nelson singing this on YouTube, except it's called Vampyres. I would say there's more than 15 percent retained.

That song is 'I'm Alive,' not 'In the End.' And wow, Dan Nelson sounds worse than shit. I've heard people call him a poor man's Anselmo, and that's exactly how he sounds in that clip. He probably tears up the karaoke bars, but for a band as big as Anthrax, Joey is obviously a far better choice.

With all due respect to Scott and Charlie for the years of keeping the faith and banging out awesome metal, I just have to put in my two cents that the new album seems to be all filler and no killer. In The End, Crawl???

Bringing Belladonna back was a huge mistake. He sounds terrible and the crooning, WTF! Bush would have killed it!

Whatever this album is it is not Thrash.

Are two of the best metal tracks of the year and easily the standouts on Worship Music, but the album a a whole is pretty damn awesome, def their best since White Noise, better than Persistence.

Hmm...the feeling of

a. the feeling of knowing he was a fuck up, and the band may actually have a life again after he nearly destroyed Anthrax with all his and Scott's petty greed, backstabbing, and trend grabbing tendencies

b. the feeling of trying to fake "cool" with someone who was backstabbed and cast aside after the official reunion tour a couple years ago, due to trying to beg Bush to rejoin unsuccessfully

c. the feeling of taking your own foot out of your mouth

d. the feeling that the gods of chance have given him a tenth chance to try and redeem the worst decision making band in metal

e. the feeling that riding the coat tails of the real big 3 by pretending you have been a successful and viable band the last 15 years actually pays really well!

all that aside...still a decent album for the most part. Without Joey they are nothing cool.

c. the feeling of
